..they all got together? or did the pilot just open with them already a team? i know there's info on line about how they got their powers, but is there an episode with it?

The telekinetic was presumably born that way. "Carrie". Johnny B was electrified/magnetized by his Rock & Roll audio equipment during a show. The telekinetic witnessed this at that same performance. Never discussed whether she instigated the accident. Her facility is stimulated by emotions. Jefferson was born a super-genius who formulated & injected himself w/ a potion that augments the growth of living tissue! It back-fired! Although, there is a 6 ft rabbit & tree size carrot. Deano Martin has no super-powers but was gifted w/ humor & motivational/persuasive chutzpah.
my personal head speculation is that the powers were extraterrestrial in nature. Gloria claimed to be the child of aliens. maybe she was correct and ET had been experimenting on the populace. of maybe they accidentally spread some kind of alien virus that randomly altered people (like Johnny B). we're never told exactly what Doc Lincoln injected in himself. I don't think that we've seen him use it on any other living organism. I guess what I'm saying is that he had already been altered by the aliens. he just figured out how to stress himself out in a way that activated the superhuman ability.
