A choter peg to the BBC if they can keep Miranda Hart out of it. I mean, she's lovely but ubiquitous. Also, no Etonians please. Who for Major Benjy?

I'm anxious to learn who's playing Diva and, esp., Quaint Irene!

It could be worse (Dawn French). I really like her but I'm sick of her getting cast in everything. (Was quite worried she would be cast as Prudie in the Poldark remake, but thankfully we dodged that bullet.)

A lazy casting choice would be Superkins for Quaint Irene. You're right about Dawn French too. Jo Scanlan and Vicki Pepperdine? Just two of my favourites but prolly wrong for this.
It's a mark of the casting success of the older series that apart from the three leads, the most familiar face to me was Geoffrey Chater, one of those classic 'Oh it's him!' faces.
Do producers allow the casting of non-household names these days?
Also, casting seems to depend on the channel. I just hope if it's ITV, they don't stuff it with the usual John Hannah, Robson and Jerome, Matthew Kelly rubbish.

Gawd, no. There's only room for one Miranda on this show and it's the one who can act.

Hmm...don't know for sure how old Quaint Irene's supposed to be as I haven't read the books but I've seen the Channel 4 TV shows...how about Rachel Stirling or Fenella Woolgar?

reply

Either Stirling or Woolgar would be great, I agree. (Like you, though, I have no idea how young she is supposed to be.)

According to this article it's Mark Gatiss!

reply

Nobody can come close to Nigel Hawthorne's Georgie, but Gatiss will be great. However, I notice he's made no comment about it on his Twitter.

Thanks for that link. Looks like a new pic of Miranda, who in that article may be inferring she hasn't worked for a while.

reply

Totally agree about Hawthorne.

Gatiss is playing Major Benjy, not Georgino. :-)

reply

Oops, yes sorry...oh well, a good choice for either.

reply

Yes! Yay for Gatiss!

(I'm thinking it'd be better (from now on) to keep the convo about the new version on its own board?)
