What Made 'Growing Pains' Jump the Shark More?

The birth of Chrissy or Kirk Cameron becoming an on-the-set tyrant after he became a Born Again Christian? And keep in mind that this stuff happened way before Leonardo DiCaprio showed up.

I think it was more Kirk Cameron trying to change the show. I think Chrissy's age jump would have still happened, but I think it started with Kirk. If the producers didn't quit because of him, it'd be interesting to see how different the rest of the series would have turned out.

GP lost a bit of its flavor or dare I say edge when Kirk Cameron decided that he didn't want to play Mike as the witty, mischievous bad boy (in favor of the "do-gooder" teacher), who got all of the girls anymore. Basically, his character really got blanded out, w/ just about anything complex or unique about him sanded off.

All of those factors plus the fact that most family sitcoms run into trouble when the kids are no longer kids and the storylines go from someone's biggest problem is having a zit to someone's biggest problem is losing their job.

I'm sure y'all would've eventually gotten bored with Kirk's personality anyway.

Definitely having to bring in Chrissy and DiCaprio. Kirk wasn't that bad if you go back and watch the episodes.

You're talking about what you're seeing in front of the camera. We have no idea what he was like--how he treated the rest of the crew.

The kid was a jump. Like family ties, they did not need her.

Although bringing in Dicaprio AFTER the 'aging baby' was born was a big mistake. I think they did it to try and blunt Cameron and create a new 'teen heart throb'. They realized Miller just could not do it. Bringing in some kid off the streets and expecting your family to help raise him when he's your student is a big stretch right there. They have to focus on raising your underage sister. Family Ties at least stopped with only one 'magic kid' and Who's the Boss returned it when the plot line didn't test well.

When Kirk grew 3 inches and the family went off to Hawaii. So basically the start of season 3.

The loss of Julie Costello.

I can't recall any episodes where they were at sea and certainly never remember seeing any sharks
