The Cocaine episode

Was cocaine that rampant in the 80's that it was at high school parties? I kind of thought it was only a ghetto thing in the 80's?

reply

It was a college party. Are you thinking of crack? Coke was never a ghetto drug do to how much it costs

reply

no, no, no. Cocaine was and still is almost exclusively a rich man's drug. You are thinking of Crack cocaine, which is a cheaper and smokeable version of coke, which is yes...primarily associated with ghetto dwellers. You may also be thinking of meth or "crank.

Supposedly, this was based on a real-life event that happened to Kirk Cameron. I believe this was on the "E! True Hollywood Story", but after the cast came back from summer hiatus one year, the producers and writers would ask the kids what they did during the summer. Kirk mentioned that he was at a party with a friend and some of the people started doing cocaine. He and his friend wanted to have nothing to do with so they hid in a bathroom and locked themselves in there. And that is where they got the idea to do the show which, incidentally, ABC did NOT want to do at all. They basically had to fight ABC to get to do that episode with a disclaimer that they had an anti-drug message from Kirk Cameron at the end of the show.

Which UP stupidly edited out.

"Jesus, does anyone?"

reply

Wait, so Growing Pains wasn't trying to promote cocaine use with this episode? With the way everyone was using it they seemed to be enjoying it. Michael was being a bit of a buzz kill, no pun intended. I'm surprised he didn't run around grabbing everyone's stash and flushing it down the commode. Now that's a way to ruin a party.

It's ironic that this episode was produced before Kirk Cameron started going "insane" w/ his new found religious beliefs (sometime around 1989-90).

reply

You call someone in Hollywood who has been married for 25+ years to the same person, never been arrested and successfully running charities insane? You may want to take a look at other people in Hollywood.

reply

When you run around getting everyone fired over every little thing, that is insane.

His ‘charities’ are an anti-abortion group that shames young women for having abortions and a camp for terminally ill children, which would be great, but only Christians are allowed to work there and it’s very religious. They don’t deny people of other faiths because they’d get in trouble but if your family wasn’t religious would you really feel comfortable there?

reply

HIS SISTER IS INSANELY HOT THOUGH...SO,THERES THAT.

reply

Does that matter?

reply

IT DOES TO ME.FULLER HOUSE IS A TOTAL SMOKE SHOW.

I graduated from high school in 1988. The high school I went to in Texas was a combination of "Less Than Zero" and "Friday Night Lights." The head cheerleader/student council president was a huge coke fiend, as were most of the popular kids. Several kids I knew died in DUI accidents or committed suicide.

reply

Wow, that's tragic. There is nothing cool about doing drugs....
