how stong is roshi

Why is it that in the first tournament Roshi is barely able to beat goku, but in the second tournament, he is about equal with tien (who is about the same as goku goku in the second tournament). Did Roshi get stonger, cause that would not make a lot of sense. So i guess he was holding back in the 1st tournament, but still doesn't sit well. Can someone help me out?

YOU'VE BEEN PWNED!!!...you're welcome

In the first tournament, he fought goku but held back...
the thing that caught him off guard was goku transforming into the giant ape..
he used almost all his full power to destroy the moon.
thats why at the very end, he was having a real hard time fighting goku..

I dont think Roshi was strong enough to beat tien, but its not as though the difference in strength was huge.

He trained.

And he was equal to Goku in the 21st tournament. Roshi wasn't holding back at all.

Why?

100% FALSE

Roshi didnt beat Tienshinhan beacause he wanted his students Goku or Krillin (Who ever won in which Goku did) to test their skills and see how much the progessed..

The reason I didnt say Yamcha cause he was injured by Tienshinhan

I am the HNIC!

It doesn't matter, he was the best in his age, but he's retired then in his old age, outgrown any desires to keep fighting, training, being the strongest.. He still did a pretty good job sparring against some of the best fighters of the time in their prime.

It's like modern day sports coaches, most of them are old retired ex-players, just because they give orders off field don't mean they will perform better or even equal the younger fitter players on the pro field.
