Well, they could not make the show go on without some changes, on one hand. That would have been boring.
On the second hand, they did not call it "Renaissance" for nothing: yes, the bearded and leathered look is the sexiest one. And the character has got the attitude that meets the look too.
Christmas Black Adder goes back to the first season vibes, with the slight difference that Edmund is supposed to be a good man, opposite to his ancestors...
And Goes forward is the most ironical season, with the reflection about who would have noticed a mad man (he pretended to be) amongst all the others. A sexy look would not have done the job as well, imho.
