Different Cuts

In trying to find this on Video or DVD I have found that there are at least two different cuts. There is a 9 1/2 hour version on VHS (but not DVD) and a 6 hour version on both VHS and DVD.

Does anyone know anything about these cuts? Is there a 9 1/2 hour DVD available?

Hi! i am a special orders clerk at a major bookstore-we sell dvds. Your 6hour, 2 disc set is all that is available and THAT is only at various Christian stores and on line, dvd-wise. The film/mini-series has been cut, to SUIT the viewing public-the Roman historical material considered offensive and "ehem", not polictically correct. (in other words it may upset some stray dinosaur out there!) i watched this mini series when it first ran in the 80s' and i am NOT as young as you all and i have been trying to get it since then-almost 30 years! The video had been pulled for quite some time and just sold through religious stores-mostly Catholic. (it hit a nerve like "Passion of The Christ") i'm still on a never ending hunt tho'-i'll get the video and have it transfered!

The 9.5 hour version is only available in the VHS format.

Although they are temporarily out of stock on the 9.5 hour VHS uncut version, it and the shorter DVD & VHS versions are available here....

Yip i am a Tolkienite
If you like A.D, check out I, Claudius, IMO the greatest piece of television drama the UK has ever produced

Here in the UK the BBC showed the series once I believe back in the mid 1980s.
Without checking the running times of the tapes for exact information, I believe each of the 5 episodes (that was how it was shown by the BBC), ran for about 100 minutes, maybe a bit longer.
Shame it has never been released on DVD.

i wanna see this

theres a site its apparantely available but im not sure whether or not its in english ?

Netflix has only the cut version even though it says the miniseries length is 600 minutes. Shame on them!

The key here is distribution. I would assume the only reason that the full version is not on DVD is because they can't find a distributor, which is sad considering the amazing acting and out of control set design. The abridged version simply found a distributor (for the religious market). The cut version actually does still have a lot of the Roman drama, but has really choppy segues and is missing several key scenes and characters. The bulk of the story is all there, and you still get the amazing performances.

You do know that 600 minutes is 10 hours...!

It is very annoying to have a series cut like this. I can't see why they could have released the full 9 hour version as well in a boxed set.

reply

That explains the 6-hour DVD version, I have, then, doesn't it? How stupid, to cut it for so-called, political correctness! I remember putting this on, and saying, "Wait a darn minute, here! I remember more scenes depicting Nero's reign! I hope this isn't an edited version!"

Here is the DVD for the full 9 1/2 hour of AD.

Right now -- 18 Aug 2015 -- a prior link that was given isn't working. But there IS currently a site that LISTS a 9-hour version: https://www.ebluejay.com/ads/item/4330176. It says it's not an original, but a rare title copied on DVD-R, that is mailed in a bubble wrap.

I haven't seen it, but plan to get one when I can.

I hope it really IS the 9-hour version. If anyone sees it, please let us know.

From the description, it sounds like the seller has other rare titles, and may offer new ones if asked. The picture at the link is NOT of the series A.D.
