Armande Assante was coached by a broadway violinist by the name of Claudia Kopec. Though, he isn't playing, his motions, movements and coordination are right on the mark.

Who cares if they weren't really playing? This scene still brings a smile to my face everytime I see it.

shareCorrect. The music would have been overdubbed regardless. However, as on-screen violin playing goes, this was some of the most believable I've ever seen.

It looked fine to me when the two of them were playing in the restaurant.
But when Max is performing onstage with the Philharmonic, his strings break and if you look carefully, you can see the strings flying all over the place.
