Another underrated Moore film

I feel this is yet another of Dudley's movies that often unfairly gets a bad rap. I liked this a LOT! Even if he does play somewhat of a psychopath (and it's a little disturbing to watch at time), it's still an interesting movie nonetheless. Now, I know that many people compare it to the original and that's why they claim it's so bad. Perhaps that's why I'm not too hard on it - I've never seen the original.

I couldn't agree more. In fact, it's one of my all-time favourite comedies. (And I like them intelligent - or at least witty, played with intelligence.)

I am glad I don't know what the critics said about it at the time (though I fear I am going to make an effort and find out about it any minute now...), but I've noticed people complaining about the "eightyish score" and the like. There was a score? I never noticed it. What I did notice were the very well-timed performances and some very funny situations in a witty and pleasantly light-hearted "comedy of errors".

This movie is what made me decide to be a professional violinist. The selection of classical music was wonderful, as was the score itself. Of course it is an "80sh" score. The movie was made in 1984. What the hell do they expect? Green Day???!!!

I totally agree. This movie was on my memory for years... I saw when I was younger, I now I wanted to find it somehow... It's a fantastic movie, one of the funniest comedies I've ever seen. IMDB scores need to be taken with caution, always.

I agree with you. I really loved it. But this is a remake, and remakes are usually underappreciated.

Completely agreed! This is one of my favourite Dudley Moore's films!

Nope, this one never gets off the ground. Most jokes come out lame and the going is generally pretty dull... and then there´s some really awful acting by Miss Kinski who only ever managed to give decent performances when working with really strong directors (like with Polanski in Tess). A very uninspired effort, all in all.

i enjoyed both the original & this remake.

the scenes & jokes in the remake are quite different tho.
(there is no violin war in the original for example)

Rex Harrison is very fun to watch.

4.9?! This has to be the most underrated movie on IMDB. This movie is a little piece of art in (let us not forget) the "most difficult genre of all". Comedy.
I think Dudley's performance was great. I wouldn't call him psychopath, it is jealousy - and people struck by it do lose it, however smart and rational they might be. I found particularly funny the films portrayal of difference between what one imagines and what actually happens in real life (something that is missing in the original). The violin duel scene is perfect as a culmination.
And "80ish score"?? I'm not sure Brahms wrote either of the pieces in 80's of any century :).
By the way I watched the original after I seen this one, and it paled in comparison. I don't think it's the reason for low rating.
