Has any body recently viewed this with friends who thought it was bad?

I have always loved this movie. When I saw it for the first time as a kid a few years younger than the Bastian actor I was so immersed in it that I felt like I was a part of the movie. I still love it. Bought the blu Rays couple years ago and I showed the movie at my house recently to some friends who were born mid 80's so a little younger not having seen it when it first came out. They couldn't stop laughing. They thought the Luck Dragon who, was always my favorite, was creepy and even pervy? They said the children were over emotional/ melo dramatic in their character portrayals. They took pot shots and wise cracks throughout the whole viewing which made me kind of sad. Has any body had this reaction from friends or even found the movie weird or lame themselves rewatching as an adult?

My friends really liked it! Though I admit I understand Falkor can sound a little pervy to some, but it never bothered me. Also rewatched it with my mom a couple of years ago, she still loves it, too. Watched it with (female) friends who love fantasy movies, that might help. Probably also helps having seen it when you were a kid.

Just watched this last night with my kids (ages 4, 5, 6). They really enjoyed it but the film has some major flaws. Mainly the padding. I started it late at night and didn't want my kids to be up TOO late.
I found that I could fast forward through sequences of Bastian shown actually reading the book, Atrayu riding on Artax, and about half of Bastian on Falcor. Surprisingly this removed about 35 minutes from the film! The remaining portions of the film -- minus the nostalgia factor -- for an adult, can be pretty cringe-worthy at times.

How appropriate. Your friends' cynicism is basically the "nothing" incarnate and the entire point of the story.

reply

Bit harsh, equating being critical of a crappy adaptation of a far superior book to being the nothing.

reply

Great example.

I felt the same way -- that the "Nothing" was a metaphor for peoples' growing apathy for the world they live in and the people they interact with and cynicism as a form of avoidance.

If my friends had done the same, I would have laughed at them as their coffins were being lowered into their graves. :|

No. I don't need that kind of negativity in my life.

Let's be bad guys.

"I don't have any friends."
"Well if you did?"
"No. I don't think the kind of friends I'd have would mind." - The Breakfast Club

Pretty much covers my answer :D

I watched it tonight with my 11 year old son. He only knows high definition tv and 3d movies. Still, he got immersed in the story without any judgement. We did not mind all the flaws- if any. I loved the story as a child and i loved it even more today with my own boy.
