How did this LOSE MTV's Video of the Year?

It's arguably the best video of all time and certainly the most successful- yet it LOST The MTV Video of the Year award to "You Might Think" from The Cars??????? Isn't that boggling?

reply

Yeah it was in retrospect. You Might Think might been revoultionary in its time, but it's nowhere near as legendary as Thriller.

Believe it or not.
There was still slight segregation in terms of "black" music back then.
MJ was even passed over for interviews (Rolling Stone) as he was black...well he was in the 80's.

So many think the reason Thriller didn't win (despite being the best music vid ever) was simply as MJ was a black musical artist and it would not have been "good publicity" for MTV.

And so, God came forth and proclaimed widescreen is the best.

Michael Jackson wasn't even the first black artist on MTV. There were many artists that happened to be black before him on the channel. The first black act on MTV was on the first day of the channel's inception with The Selector's "Celebrate the Bullet".

I never said he was the first black artist on MTV.
However he was the first to really make a worldwide impact.

So given the universal appeal of MTV they may have felt awarding a "black artist" in such a way would not have been the best decision they could have made at that time.

And so, God came forth and proclaimed widescreen is the best.

MJ was always black. Being black isn't just about the color of your skin, but about your ethnical background as well.

Intelligence and purity.

Very true. Still, there were alot of black artists on MTV (including Prince) that came first before MJ. If I were them, I'd be concerned about that.

If anything, MJ really changed the face of the medium from turning the music video from commerical to short film.

Thriller was in a class by itself when it was released(and to this day still is). No moon man statue could've been enough to validate its success and impact on the music world and videos in general.
