Tone of the Movie

I was wondering, what kind of parody is this movie?
Akin to Tenacious D, making fun while at the same time paying homage,
Or more like Innocence of Muslims, just a mean spirited mockery?

Because I really enjoy rock (not the 80's, though, God,those were awful)and was wondering if the movie would entretain or just annoy.

If you don't enjoy 80s rock, you will probably hate this movie. You really need to know pop music from a 20-year span of time (1963 - 1983) to appreciate the send-up given here. If you were born after 1980 or so, you might not understand, or "get" it.

I do know the 80's very well. That's why I hate them.
And as far as knowing pop music from the 60's to the 80's, my iPod is practically entirelly composed of this period.
The problem is I don't know if this is a parody (meant to entretain, spoof) or just mocking (meant to offend).

It is a very loving send-up of the hard rock/heavy metal scene. The songs are actually quite good for what they are. Highly recommended!

Not sure if your question was answered - if you haven't watched it yet you should. It's not at all a mean spirited movie. It definitely digs into the ridiculous nature of the music industry, and heavy metal in particular, but there's an obvious affection for the characters.

I find it so entertaining that I watch it at least once a year. Also check out the DVD commentary if possible.
