''one of Englands loudest bands!''

I can't remember where I saw this initially, possibly the box cover art, but every time I hear it I can't help but wonder if its supposed to be a joke. If Spinal Tap are so great (sic), wouldn't it be 'Englands loudest band!' It almost sounds like a self depreciating joke. I feel like I might be stating the obvious here. Thoughts?

You've just explained the joke... but still don't understand?

Subtle humor. I'm sure that went over a lot of people's heads. It kind of reminds me of a quote in the movie Time Bandits.

"I have the map! I have the map! And the day after tomorrow... The world!"

To me part of the joke is that nothing nice can be thought of to say so it's like "Well they are loud".

The other part of the joke is there are lots of loud English bands so to be one of the loudest really makes them loud.

Again "loud" being the only description that can be used accurately without being insulting as well.

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.

There are other hard rock/heavy metal bands that people can list to and "Spinal Tap" is meant to be one of those. I guess they would have decided it wouldn't be believable to the public for them to boast that they were the "loudest" when so many similar bands are very loud.

Spinal Tap at least thinks they are the loudest because they can turn their amplifiers "up to eleven". :)
