was marty dibergi a nice guy

I couldn't tell that from watching the movie.

The band felt in retrospect that he made them look bad, in the footage he chose to use in the movie. But lets face it, they didn't exactly make it easy for him! lol I think we're probably meant to come away thinking he had the best intentions though. Maybe even while sending his character up a little at the same time.

His name is meant to evoke "Marty Scorsese" who directed The Last Waltz, the 1978 documentary about the final concert of The Band. Although the film is generally acclaimed and beloved it does have the effect of presenting the musicians in the film as sad, burnt-out, addicted to drugs, and it also contained infamous moments like Neil Young performing with a gigantic chunk of cocaine hanging out of his nose. You could argue that Scorsese kind of made some people look bad.

I think he's generally an ethical person, and certainly smarter than the band members, but the DVD feature "Catching Up With Marty DiBergi" reveals him to be sort of a hack who made crappy commercials and things like that.

It's not HIS fault all the bad things that happened to the band in the movie happened to them, but the hilarious DVD commentary (where the band members comment AS the band members) has them talking about him like he was up to no good, deliberately making a film that made Spinal Tap look bad.

I think he is just a hack and an opportunist also getting on in years and hanging out for one last chance to make it big himself. The question is did Spinal Tap give him anything positive to work with?!

Sometimes a movie or tv show plot is so stupid that only the stupid can understand it.

Yeah, he seemed sincere and interested in trying to understand what made the band tick. There was no sarcastic commentary about the band's problems or beliefs or behaviour.
