DVD EDITION CENSORED?

Being one of the very few people-in Greece-that have seen and loved this film,I'd really like to know if the DVD edition is indeed cut,as some people quote.Does this also apply for the other non-US editions as well?

I know the Uk Region 2 one is cut by about 2seconds its the sex with the prostitute you only seethe end tail of it. I got the original "Retal" CIC video one of it and it is very very slightly longer.

I originally saw the movie on a cable movie channel. Really hot steamy shower sex. I was really hooked on Steven Bauer. I still think she made a mistake sticking with her dork of a husband. Not sure what I would've done in that situation....

Anyway, I purchased a copy on VHS and was elated that the film I saw on cable was the film on tape. When it came out on DVD I was glad because with the VHS players today, tapes have a tendency to get "eaten" and I didn't want to lose the film. So I got the DVD and was surprised to find the time was shorter than the VHS version. I read the VHS box and it has a disclaimer that it contains some scenes that were in the European version. Which is why the DVD is shorter and some of the hotter sex scenes cut...especially the scenes between Bauer and Williams. I don't understand why the US DVD had to be cut. Thankfully I met someone who has a system to transfer from VHS to DVD and I asked him to do that for me.

If you buy the DVD, make sure it includes scenes that are in the European version. I have an all region DVD player, so if I ever see a foreign copy of the film available on DVD, I will purchase that as back up. This is one film I don't want to lose.

Thank you for your info
I actually have an R4 DVD edition(Australian)which I have not been able to watch yet.The Amazon reviews for the US edition back you up 100%.
Let's just hope it does not apply for the Australian DVD.
That is if it was not US-sourced.
I do not know if the UK DVD is also cut.

Damn! I got the US DVD. Knew something was missing just couldn't place it. Damn! I hate when this happens!

This is strange. I saw it in a theatre and the prostitute sequence was cut for an R rating. It came out on VHS with the R rating BUT uncut. Now it's on DVD cut again? That makes no sense! It's not a big deal (only a few seconds are gone) but you almost get to see Bauer full frontal. That's worth catching:)

You know, I remember seeing a glimpse of a shower scene in the Thief of Hearts music video, but never saw one in the movie. Was it cut from some versions.:(

I saw a version that I found online. I guess it must have been the edited version though, because I only remember the shooting range scene as being one of those steamy-type scenes. How much more is there in the uncut version?

"I still think she made a mistake sticking with her dork of a husband."

Why was Ray a dork? Because he was a successful author and not a criminal like Scott? Or just because he wore glasses?

Yes, it's cut. The erotic scenes are shortened. This happens a lot with older release films, probably because the studios don't put a lot of effort into these titles; there isn't enough money to be made. Other films I can think of that have been cut for dvd release are "All the Right Moves" with Tom Cruise's nude scene removed, and "The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea" where like 10 minutes of explicit sex was simply removed from the film! Butchering art like this is a form of vandalism. It shouldn't even be allowed.

The target practice scene is heavily edited.

reply

I guess I saw the cut version then because the target practice scene didn't seem long enough and also seemed from what I'd read that they'd show more than was shown. Also, was that the only erotic scene, or were there originally more? Is there a way to find the original version that I read was released on VHS way back? Also, what exactly did the DVD version cut?

reply

The "European" version that everyone is looking for does not exist on dvd...ANYWHERE. Back in the day Paramount did release the longer, more graphic cut on videocassette, in North America. But for the dvd edition Paramount decided to release the R rated version only..internationally. So even if you buy this dvd in Holland, or Germany, or ANYWHERE in the world, you will only get this one version. Yep, it sucks! They did the same thing to a movie called "Wild Orchid 2," and it makes absolutely no sense. Anyway the only way to see "Thief of Hearts" in it's true uncut version, would be to get the old unrated VHS. At least the dvd offers a nice, widescreen transfer..I hope this saves somebody some time and money in a search that will lead nowhere.

If you have a laserdisc player you can also find the uncut version on laserdisc which is probably the best way to watch it as VHS degrades overtime and a movie this old on tape is going to be pretty shitty to watch. I was going through my old collection of VHS movies and most of them are suffering from age with the picture suffering mild to severely. I wouldn't expect any of these from the 80's to be worth buying.
