Crazy guy driving the white van?

What movie was this? There's a scene where he runs someone over, and he's laughing. There's another scene where he knocks on a woman's door and asks if her husband is home.

martin landau laughing or even just smiling = terrifying.

You really should see it. I enjoyed it so much that I watched it twice (on YouTube) Here's the link:

The strange thing about it is that although it has Landau chasing down the postman in the van and taking the hat, you don't hear him say "I want the/that hat" in this version. I wonder why. Anyway, it's still definitely worth a look.

They did a lot of redubbing for the 'Terror in the Aisles' version of that scene (for some reason the delivery guy has an entirely different voice, too). I guess they threw in "I want the hat" to make it clear what was going on with just a clip.

I tracked down this movie way back when the only way you could get it was the VHS tape, just on the strength of the scenes in 'Terror' because they were absolutely hilarious, ha ha. What a disappointment the movie itself was. Glad someone liked it though. :)

reply

Oh, THAT explains it. I'm disappointed the hat lines weren't in the movie. Thanks for the info.

reply

You bet. ☺

Other weird quirk I noticed: They use a lot of 'Wait Until Dark,' but scrub any trace of Audrey Hepburn from it. Not only do we never see a clip with her on screen, the couple of offscreen lines they do include are redubbed by a different actress.

I'm sure that's a legal matter...organizing the rights and clearances for this movie must have been a total nightmare, ha ha. My hat is off to them just for doing it.

Wow, I don't remember 'Wait Until Dark' in that at all. I guess they must have showed Alan Arkin. I think I would have remembered him being in it (although my medications zap so much of my memory out of my brain that it's pitiful. I'll bet that's what happened).

I have never seen that whole movie - bits and pieces of it over the years, but never the whole thing. I'd like to see it in full one day.

Officer Krupke, what are we to dooooo?!?
Gee, Officer Krupke -- KRUP YOU!!!

It's really worth checking out...watch it with the lights off if you can. In theaters they would actually turn off all the house lights for the last ten minutes or so.

Not surprised you don't remember it being in here actually, it seems like a different movie because of the way they avoid anything with Hepburn. (I said "a lot" more because they spread it out over the whole documentary than because they use very many actual scenes.) They show a bit of the dialogue where the criminals are comparing weapons, and after that it's mostly just a lot of single shots of Arkin looking creepy.

I'll definitely watch Alone in the Dark next time I see that it will be on. I'll give Terror in the Aisles another shot as well. Maybe I'll remember more of it, too. I love Donald Pleasance (and Alan Arkin).

reply

Oh, 'Alone in the Dark' I wouldn't recommend at all, LOL. I wish I could but it's really terrible. The bits in 'Terror in the Aisles' aren't just the best, they play better when they're not in the movie.

'Wait Until Dark' on the other hand, you should definitely see. :)

reply

I meant to say "Wait Until Dark," and not "Alone in the Dark." I confused myself. Although I did give "Alone in the Dark" a 7/10. I thought it was pretty decent.

reply

I sought it out just because of 'Terror in the Aisles' (and that cast!) but I was very disappointed, heh. Didn't work for me at all, even as an enjoyably bad movie. I'll say this much though, it probably gave Erland van Lidth more dialogue than the rest of his roles combined.

reply

Actually, the lines were in the movie. TCM was showing it almost 2 weeks ago (during their Underground thing) and the lines were indeed spoken. And yes, Martin Landau looked every bit as loony as in Terror.
