An almost perfect film, but...

there are a few things i never liked about it:
- linda hamilton looks too old for an 18-year-old girl
- the stop motion endoskeleton (never found stop motion fx convincing)
- arnold's rubber face. that scene is hilarious, especially when in the same movie there's a dialog from kyle reese about how older terminator models had rubber skin and were therefore easy to spot...
- the punks - that scene escalated to quickly. they were joking around and from one second to the other acting totally aggressive

reply

- Linda was about 28 when she made Terminator. Was she supposed to be 18 as Sarah?
- the punks: yes, I agree with you but however they pulled their knives when Armie asked for their clothes and also they were drunk

reply

The Punks were probably also not of sound mind either.

reply

ahhha the skeleton is definitely the worst ..

reply

The only problem I had was the fake Terminator. Special effects-wise, it was the pits!!!

reply

There's some typical junk dialogue, Arnold wooden (look left/right) and subpar special effects.

But the movie is solid.

The entire idea of the movie should be scary as hell now...

reply

The idea of any more sequels is terrifying

reply

So true.

reply

" joking around and from one second to the other acting totally aggressive"
I thought that was pretty realistic, especially as Arnie was threatening them

reply

it would be threatening if arnie said "give me your clothes or i'll kill you", but he only said "your clothes, give them to me".
if a naked seemingly confused man walks up to you and asks for your clothes, you wouldn't take it seriously, would you?

reply

ok , it was only a semi-threat , but thugs like that dont need an excuse.
Its only the fact he obviously had nothing to steal that didnt make it a guaranteed mugging

reply

naked people outside the adult industry in the real world are often crazies or psychos not to much of a stretch

reply

Agreed. Those are punks, not guys you can have naked chit chat with. Even if the terminator didn't ask for their clothes, they would not let him just leave. If we were to be a regular man in the terminators place, and those guys saw us, there's no way we were walking away from that unharmed.

Why I like T2 and Dark Fate Better

reply

- Was she supposed to be 18? I always assumed Sarah Connor was mid-20s.
- Stop motion is awesome and scary. Is it because you are too young, like, post-cg young?
- Rubber face was also creepy and inhuman. Much better than sequels with obvious glued on eyepieces and stuff.
- Punks are dangerous. They aren't even really friends with each other.

reply

no, i grew up with stop motion fx. it has a certain charm for example in ray harryhausen movies, but it never looked realistic.

There ARE a few things I don't like about your post:

- Using 'there's a few', when it should be 'there ARE a few'
- Lack of capitalization
- Lack of punctuation
- Using 'to', when you mean to use 'too'
- Your points are all wrong

First of all, Linda Hamilton is not supposed to be a 18-year old GIRL (not that 18-year old is a 'girl' anymore, that's an adult age). She's whatever she is, and I think she looks passable in this (never been a fan of her, I don't like her type of face, but she's not completely repulsive, either). I concess that she could've been replaced with someone prettier and livelier and nothing much would've been lost. However, her performance is perfect, so she fits this movie like a glove.

- The stop motion-stuff looks good to me, it makes the scenes more 'horrorlike', creepier, mechanical and maybe even 'other-wordly' in a scary way, it's like 'nightmare quality', where you experience differently when you are panicking and in shock and horrible things are happening. Fits this movie very well.

- You probably mean the animatronics terminator? That's actually one of the best parts of the movie, and although the contrast between a 'live Arnold' and the animatronics is steep, it still looks cool and creepy, and I'd watch a movie where the terminator ALWAYS looked like that... nothing wrong with Arnold's performance or looks here, but dang, that animatronics looks SO terminatory! You have no taste or common sense.

- That punk-scene escalated organicallly and perfectly. The terminator was always ready to terminate, if need be, and when threatening weapons are suddenly shown (and rightfully so - how would YOU react if you were drunk, trying to look like a tough guy amidst two of your good friends, had a knife on you, and some naked dude starts demanding your clothes suddenly? It's pretty common to become extremely angry in this type of a situation, just look at how aggressive many people become when they drink alcohol..

reply

.. there are such things as bar fights, gang wars, etc. Who knows WHAT these punks have gone through in this possibly violent part of town they've just been touring, before taking a small rest in a scenic place?)

They were also NOT 'joking around', you have a lot to learn about psychology and behaviour. They were TAUNTING and MOCKING someone that clearly isn't right in the head - who walks around naked at night? Clearly a NUTCASE to be mocked, insulted, taunted, etc.

It's only when the nutcase suddenly shows he doesn't understand his rightful place, but start trying to dominate the pack, that they get angry - the nutcase went off script! He was supposed to be scared and timid, and then the punks could bully him properly, but he starts suddenly issuing commands and DEMANDING to get their clothes?!

HOW AGGRAVATING!!

So no, it didn't 'escalate to [sic] quickly' (how can you not know how to write 'too'??), it escalated EXACTLY as predicted by the behaviour and psychology that can be expected in that situation, sort of proving that even living people are basically instinctually and psychologically behaviour-programmed automatons to an extent (a poignant point in a 'sci-fi' movie)!

reply

The stop-motion stuff is almost like 'artistical choice' that depicts how 'sense of time' changes when you're in an impossible, panicky situation with shock and horror all around you, trying to escape a super scary stalker - - it can start seeming as if time is jumping forward in small increments instead of flowing smoothly!

So, as 'psychological, artistical depiction of what's happening', the stop-motion can be even MORE realistic and a silky-smooth, fluid movement would be - it would RUIN THE EMOTIONAL EFFECT COMPLETELY.

For another movie that ACTUALLY even mentions something like this happening when you get upset, is 'Blue Thunder' - the protagonist 'checks his sense of time' with a special watch.. so please understand WHAT you are criticizing (and how to type english language correctly), before mocking something you don't understand or haven't ever thought about.

reply

thanks for correcting my bad english. maybe i should write in my native language next time, let's see how you can keep up then ;)
lack of capitalization is intentional - i always use minuscule script when writing online, just a stylistic choice.

your other points are fair enough. sure it's all subjective, and i see what you mean that the stop motion has 'nightmare quality'. i loved the stop motion medusa in the original 'clash of the titans' movie for the same reason, but in terminator it didn't work for me.

reply

You're entitled to your opinion but you've been outnumbered on it.

reply

I think he could have done without the grammar lesson

reply

Sarah Connor and Kyle Reece are supposed to be around 17-20 in this film, and yes, both actors look much older than the role intended.

reply

They're both late 20s as intended.

reply

Incorrect.

reply

Sources please?

reply

I'll search again later. We looked this up years ago so it's been a while.

But feel free to show me sources that say they were late 20s in the first Terminator film, because I cannot imagine where you could have gotten that either lol. The original film doesn't say how old they are.

reply

When u find it let us all know.

reply

I also requested your sources. Because I would like to know where your age
estimation comes from too.
