Gloves?

Watched this excellent movie again last night and a random question occurred to me. Why does the Terminator steal and wear the fingerless leather gloves from the punks? Surely being a cyborg they served him no useful purpose. Was he just a fashion conscious Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 or what?

reply

I always thought it was part of the outfit stolen from one of the punks.

reply

No, it definitely was, and I can understand why he needed to cover up. But black fingerless gloves? Seems like unnecessary accessorizing. Guess you could say the same for the shades. A robot's gotta look cool I suppose.

reply

The shades can conceal his robotic eye..it did later in the movie.. The gloves??? Maybe the human skin tends to fall apart at the hands from intense robotic brawls..

reply

The Terminator didn't have any knowledge of early 80's punk fashion. He might have just assumed it was a necessary part of the outfit, and would be needed to help him blend in to society.

Or he just figured that with all the shooting and fighting he would be doing, it would be better to keep his hands protected.

reply

Go on then, ruin my fun with logic.

reply

I didn't really notice this before but thinking about it makes me feel his robotic logic programming decided it was part of what people wear and was required to try and blend in.

reply

That seems right. They were wearing it so he wore it.

reply

I think he just figured it would help him blend in more.

reply

I just figured it was for a more secure grip purpose without having to use his excess strength.

reply

It's the crumbs of the 'blending in' concept that was largely abandoned, showing its last breath.

They look cool, they protect the hands so he can possibly hit harder without breaking the skin/flesh, and the machine doesn't want to raise suspicions by having an outfit with missing parts.

I think the real reason is that Arnold looks a bit more menacing with the full punk outfit.
