Outside the bubble of its iconic bits - film belongs to Biehn & Hamilton

I've long wondered why so many gets stuck on the iconic bits of The Terminator, yet few seem to understand how the heart and soul of the picture is entirely down to Biehn and Hamilton. Biehn is one of the most underrated leading men in Hollywood history. He's chivalrous and doesn't need to spout funny lines to make an impact. I enjoy his strong-silent type delivery - its reminiscent of a bygone era of film-making.

Here's my short review of The Terminator - for anyone interested.

All true but you are also right...Biehn-I loved him in this film; he was practically ferally intense in this film.

Why can't you wretched prey creatures understand that the Universe doesn't owe you anything!?

Yes absolutely agree. Michael Biehn is one of my favorite actors.

Biehn is THE most underrated leading man in Hollywood history. Completely agree with your whole assessment. This was the first R-rated movie I ever saw as a child, and Biehn's monologue describing how merciless and unstoppable the terminator is was completely terrifying for me. Absolutely intense.

I know this is a really old thread but I would still like to respond.

This film is great in many ways but I have always appreciated it most as a love story. I loved the character of Kyle Reese and think Michael Biehn did an excellent job portraying him. I was always sorry he wasn't included in flashbacks or dream sequences. (I understand some were filmed but later cut.)

Anyway, thanks for making this point.

Is there any doubt that they’re not essential to the film? Because this really is their story and they both bring so much depth to the film with their performances. Without them, this Sci-Fi classic would lack a soul.

Having said that, Schwarzenegger as The Terminator gets raved about for good reasons. In my opinion, he gives a genuinely great performance. It’s not just his look, one-liners, intimidating size and the way he holds and points a gun that makes him standout: it is everything about his performance. The sinister look in his face, his calm yet animalistic demeanor, his simple but powerful delivery, and did I forget to mention the deadly expression in his eyes? He’s terrifyingly good. While his performance can easily be written off as one-note, I believe he brings a lot more to the role than some would give him credit for.
