Boy, this movie sure did suck a big one!

It was kind of cliched in many places...but I have seen a lot worse. Ralph Macchio was much better at waxing on and off, that's for sure.

"You have two forms of expression, silence and rage."

This movie was great. Just for Richard Mulligan alone. He was awesome as the pysch patient who pretended to be a teacher...especially wen he was George Washington and they made a boat out of desks. It is a bit dated...but overall it had good writing, great acting and a good soundtrack....

disagree. great cast, i was surprised by all the familiar faces. actually had a good storyline, and the bit about the teacher taking the student for an abortion would probably be more controversial today like fast times at ridgemont high.

reply

Nope. Great movie. And probably the most realistic movie about teachers there is. Most teacher movies suck because in the end the teachers achieve some amazing test results and everyone feels good. This one really shows the inner workings of a school. From the cowardly principal to the teacher unions to the stupid parents blaming the teachers for their own failures, this movie nails it.

reply

Absolutely. I second your post.
Don't forget the menacing superintendent, and the clueless school board. Only in education do you find a group of professionals whose procedures and work environment are governed by a board of amateurs. If you're lucky, you'll wind up with a committed respectful group of people.

The union selling out one of the very teachers they are supposed to represent was also dead-on.

The issues that this movie covers still ring true today too.

It isn't a terrible film, but there are too many laughs at the beginning so when it finally gets serious near the end, you don't care as much. Still some of those laughs were good.

Have to disagree on that jivewhiteboy. I put in as one of my top 15 favorites of all time. Now to be fair I must admit I was 17 when this came out. Great cast, great music, great story and some very funny parts. It hit home with the drama and it had heart and soul so I don't agree with it being cheesy at all. Now it wasn't perfect. Jo Beth Williams was a little annoying (really should not have gone topless) and the worst line in any movie ever "I've just had an abortion, I think I'm old enough to smoke" Terrible! Anyway that's my thoughts.

The scene where Jobeth Williams disrobes in school was a reference to Alex earlier saying she should walk naked down the halls to really see what was happening there. He didn't mean it literally. Also, it was just to set up another laugh in the film.

Great movie. I never get tired of watching it. Why would anyone not like it?

We've got people in my area who believe this movie is the gospel truth about the way teachers behave. This movie was a collection of bad behavior all rolled into one school. People still base their decisions about voting for school issues off of behavior they witnessed only in this movie.
This movie has done d a m a g e and I wish it would just go away.

Being a teacher at the time of this movie this was realistic in so many ways. There are actually a few professors who have been in the news occasionally for dressing up as people in history and really getting the point across for learning the subject.I have seen burned out teachers, complaining teachers, and with the recent spate of teachers molesting students (PE teacher in this one)in San Diego it seems to be realistic. I am no longer a teacher by choice, I burned out also and took time off to re-think my career choices. This movie points out a lot of the reasons.
