I have pitty for Rubell

I was 13 when this came out. I can remember faculty like him snd ..all of them. In looking back now at 45 I think Rubell is as much of a victim of the system as the kids. I get from his and Jurel's interactions that long ago they cared and tried now after years of abuse and pain and loss .of their own and watching kids get lost Jurel drinks misses Mondays and Rubell seems he just wants to get thru week to week year to year.

You may be right. A lot of teachers come into the system hoping to turn minds around and make a difference, and then they get sucked into the system that told them, "This is the way it is whether you like it or not". Only difference is Alex still did care for the kids, thought the were worth it, and would find that passion later in the film. Rubell still was a "company man" through and through defending a broken system.
