You couldn't remake something like this today without drastically changing it. Even if you kept the story the same, a modern-day update would come across being much darker, and a lot less nostalgic.
Just think of this movie as a time capsule from the age of MTV's ascendance that tried to marry the late 1950s to the early 1980's.
What about the original movie do you find so objectionable that it needs to be remade? A good movie doesn't need to be remade if it's already a good movie.

It does. SoF is a fun comic book style love story that could appeal to modern audiences in the same way as Marvel films. Most people in the 18-30 age group would never bother seeing an oldie like this. However, remake it with modern film effects, better audio, fresh talent, then set it to a current music soundtrack and it would be a fun new fresh film. Not saying the original version needs improving, but remakes are not always a critique of the original. Some can be an homage to it. Take the King Kong remakes, each one can stand alone with its approach to the same story, but each made for a different audience and era.
