The ending gets me everything.

Cody goes through all that trouble to rescue the girl then doesn't settle down with her.

if you ever need me for something... I'll be there.

The ending is pure "Casablanca".

Tom Cody: Look, I know you're gonna be going places with your music and stuff and... and I'm not the kind of guy to be carrying your guitars along for you. But if you ever need me for something... I'll be there.

Rick: .... Where I'm going, you can't follow. What I've got to do, you can't be any part of. Ilsa, I'm no good at being noble, but it doesn't take much to see that the problems of three little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this crazy world. Someday you'll understand that.

It's very similar to the end of "Casablanca" in that respect, but there's also a fundamental difference. Rick let Ilsa go because he was about to take up the struggle against the Nazis, and because she was a married woman, and thus off limits (in the Hayes code era). Cody wasn't being so noble here. It's merely that she's going to hit the big time, and if stayed with her, he'd end up being Mr. Ellen Aim, which is not something he could ever be content to become.
