ava's tape=insight?

It seemed significant to me that ava loved her blues recording of "I put a spell on you" She referred to the artist as her "main man" This is in direct contrast to Willie, who strongly disliked the music. This seemed odd especially in Willie's case since he was the one so intent on being "American" throughout the movie. What does it mean? I dont know this movie left me with so many questions. Did ava trick Willy into getting on the plane? or did she just change her mind? Did Willie leave in search of ava or just because he wanted to go home? Could Eddie be the key to unlocking the mystery? Before the dog races Eddy says he had a good feeling about them. At the end of the movie when Willy flys away he again says that he had a bad feeling. Is there some connection there? Maybe the "spell on you song" is meant to represent the spell that America placed on Willie. He hated the song because it reminded him of how trapped he was, on the other hand ava loved the song because she was still naive enough to believe in the American dream or something. Think about it. She worked in a hot dog stand. She wanted to see a kung foo flick instead of a foreign movie when the boy asked her out. Also what about the water in the movie. One giant body of water was frozen the other was not... that must mean something. Sorry I know this is long probably no one will read it now. I would be interested to hear other perspectives though.

The frozen body of water was a lake in winter in Ohio. The other body of water was the Atlantic Ocean. Not EVERYTHING means something.

but what's funny is that no matter where they go, there they are.

garko I think that's the most perceptive thing said about the movie on this page. People need to stop looking at films as if they were crossword puzzles

I don't know if there is much meaning in the two bodies of water, but I think that it's a valid point. The three characters remain constant in both settings. Eva is always trapped within the apartment and the guys go to the races no matter if they are by the cold lake or warm ocean. They remain the same even in Paradise or The New World. I think this also relates to the question about the title. "Stranger than Paradise" implies that paradise already is or can be strange.
