"If my grandmother had wheels..."

When Scotty says, "aye, and if my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a wagon," what does that mean?

reply

It means he thinks it's nonsense; BS(Putting wheels on his grandmother wouldn't make her a wagon...she'd just be a woman with wheels; but you might try to pass her off as a wagon to an idiot).

What the above poster said. Scotty thought transwarp travel was nonsense. Putting a transwarp drive in a ship wouldn't make it transwarp capable, just as putting wheels on a woman wouldn't make her a wagon.

We have a saying here that's like this.
"If my grandmother were yellow and tinkled, she would be a tram"
(We have yellow trams.)

The emphasis is on "if". The meaning is that you can put any kind of nonsense after "if", when the condition is not met.

Don't you have this in english?
