favorite Star Trek movie villain

Now any time this list come up (and I’m just referencing the movies, the shows look pretty stupid), Khan always gets ranked as the best. Don’t me wrong, Ricardo Montalban does do a terrific job as Khan but he is not the good only villain in the. There was Christopher Plumber, that Klingon with the eye patch. There was Tom Hardy as that clone of Picard. V’ger and that bald chick from the first one. God or whatever that thing was from 5 the Final Frontier. Plus Kim Cattrall, Malcolm McDowell, and Eric Bana all pop up at some point.

But the question is, who is your favorite villain?
Spoilers…

To me, my favorite is Kruge from Search for Spock.

Search for Spock is one of my favorite of all the Trek films. While a lot of people say Wrath of Khan is the best, Search for Spock is really good to. And really to me Khan and Spock seem like one long movie, similar to Godfather and Godfather 2. Those two are the most connected of all the sequels. And I think Christopher Lloyd added a lot. He is a very underrated actor. He was real good in Clue, Addams Family 1 & 2, One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest, Sin City 2 and course he played a truly terrifying villain in Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
And here he was great here to.

He brought a lot of intensity to the role, his character was just so ruthless. I mean he shot and killed one of his own men for making a mistake.
And he got David killed. Now I know everyone was blown away by Spock’s death, and yeah it was a pretty great scene. But Spock died saving the Enterprise. And you know, he came back in the second movie. David’s death was completely pointless and meaningless. He died so brutally and so quickly. Kruge had him killed just to prove that he could. “Kill one of them, I don’t care which.” BAD ASS.
And David’s death actually had long term ramifications. For one thing he stayed dead. Also, as we see in VI The Undiscovered Country, the death of his son haunted Kirk for years and made it very hard for him to trust any Klingon. Which caused a fair amount of problems.
But they also gave him some personality and some depth. I hate it, in movies when villains are just evil because it propels the plot forward. Think of Avatar or No Country for Old Men.

Now think about the scene with his girlfriend. Sure he was going to kill her but he still took the time to tell she would be remembered with honor.
Or when Kirk asks for a minute to inform the crew of the Enterprise that they were surrendering. What does Kurge say “take two minutes for you and your gallant crew .” He did try to show them some respect. In a lot of ways I think Kurge and Kirk were very similar. They were both warriors.

Plus he had that dog thing, on the ship. He cared about that thing and was sad when it died. It was little touches like that, that made him seem more real. More fleshed out.

Plus unlike Khan, Kurge actually got to go one on one with Kirk.

They had that great fight to the death on Genesis. I love when Kirk points out that the planet is literally ripping itself apart, “Exhilarating isn’t.” Even facing death he was still bad ass. Still tough, still a warrior.
“If we don’t help each other, will be both die.”
“If that’s what’s to be then that’s what’s to be.”

Yeah Kruge was def the best.

Who was your favorite and why.

Christopher Lloyd's performance took A LOT of flak when that ST3 came out, I remember a joke at the time about it was:

"Give me Genesis, Kirk!"
"NO!"
"Oh, okey-doke."

I also distinctly remember a review that said Lloyd's performance was hurt by his "warbling baritone." Love that phrase.

Despite this, I think time has been very kind to Kruge. Lloyd was a victim then of his own typecasting and having to follow Ricardo Montalban, now I think he is now rightly regarded as one of the best Star Trek villains.

And to know that film has documented a wrestling match between Christopher Lloyd and William Shatner makes it all worthwhile.
