any suggestions?

Tom Hanks again, but this time he is cast as Splash instead of as the human. Hanks playing a mermaid would be a huge hit.

Instead of Darryl Hannah, it would be Taylor Swift as the Mermaid and the Tom Hanks role would go to an actor of color for modern day audiences

It could be repackaged as a trans allegory as in the retconning of the Matrix. Maddison doesn't need legs, she just has to feel human, Eugene Levy's character could be replaced by society itself refusing to affirm her feels.
