Wonderful, Yet So Sad

That is precisely my opinion of this film. I enjoyed it as a slice of life drama that was inherently unpredictable in terms of where it was going. But it was wonderfully enjoyable as a realistic drama that depicted two teenage girls trying to adjust to some trying circumstances in their separate lives. What makes it sad is that one sees them begin to see life as a tragedy that only a certain unpleasant result can help them change. What makes it a tragedy is the fact one completely understands why the film has to end the way it does. What makes " Sonatine " ( 1984 ) memorable is the fact that it is the courage to follow through on its' ultimately true promised ending. What makes it depressing is the fact that the characters' around the young girls made it inevitable that there was no other way for them to prove just how cold nd uncaring and selfish the human society can be.
