Adolph Caesar performance is worth the movie

It's an interesting dramatic movie involving murder, investigation, prejudice and showing a younger and promising Denzel Washington. Rollins Jr. is good as always until his death. Adolph Caesar has the best performance as Sergeant Waters. He didn't just play a role, he lived it! Too bad that he didn't win the Golden Globe nor the Oscar for best supporting actor in 1984. Unfortunately, he's not here anymore to teach the new generation of actors.

Yes you are right! And as crude as he was he made a point. I wish some of these young guys today could watch this film and get a clue. PULL YOUR PANTS UP AND ACT LIKE YOUNG MEN! DON'T FEED A STEREOTYPE.

Yep, he made a point.....and got killed for it.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

Yes, Adolph was the great in this movie. After so many years of work as an actor and narrator(it was his voice that you heard in the old commercials for the United Negro College Fund saying the classic tag line, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste"), he was finally starting come into his own as a star. Like other black actors in this movie--David Alan Grier, Robert Townsend, and of course, Denzel Washington--"A Soldier's Story" was his springboard to Hollywood stardom. It's sad that he passed away shortly after his appearance in the "Color Purple," his subsequent film, but his legend as Sgt. Waters is immortal.

Extremely well-acted film, I was shocked that Mr. Caesar didn't win the Oscar.

Fantastic performance from him

Its that man again!!

Some of the lines that he had surely went down as some of the most memorable in the history of cinema.

"I'm a soldier, Peterson...and the kind 'o colored man that don't like you lazy-ass shiftless negroes."

and the part where he is in the bar telling Wilkie the story of the Cafe Napoleon sent chills up my spine when he so casually tells that they killed the ignorant monkey soldier. The cinematography of how the lights die down and the music goes silent as he goes deeper in the story gives you the feeling that it's just you and him in the room talking.

"My daddy said we got to turn our back on his kind, Wilkie...the chit-lins, collared greens, cornbread style. We are men...SOLDIERS...and I will not allow our people to be cheated out of their honor and respect in this war 'cause of fools like CJ."

CLASSIC

I agree. That is classic.

In a film with several great performances, Adolph Caesar's portrayal of Sgt. Waters stood out.

Thankfully he was nominated and no doubt did he deserve to win. I just saw the film and I thought he was brilliant.

That scene where he recounts the humiliated Black soldier in WWII was fantastic.

Watching it now. It is WWI he is referring to.

Adolph Caesar reminds me Sgt. R.Lee Emery in Full Metal Jacket but the role is more revealing. Oscar worthy is correct

Adolph Caesar is definitely the MVP performance in this film. Its a shame we didnt see more from him due to his passing but his performance here just blew me away.
