Beginning Didn't Make Sense

Like I said the start to this film didn't make any sense whatsoever, and I really don't care who I spoil it for I mean c'mon! This is at best a movie you'll see once in your life (hopefully) so it's no sin to include spoilers here, you may thank me for it later.

In the beginning when the guy picks up the teenage girl hitchhiker, they spend some together and in the evening she comes on to him and he's getting ready to....well you know, then she shoots and kills him and drives off in another car I think.

Thing is what did that have to do with the rest of the movie? The way the movie played out, it had another story that had to do with totally different people so I'm kinda wondering what the beginning was about and what did it have to do with the rest of the movie in general? If any of you understand that, feel free to share that info because I couldn't help but wonder to myself what that was all about.

The guy who was shot in the beginning was named Laufman. He was supposed to be the get-away driver after the other two robbed the armored truck. Problem is, the night before the heist, he picked up that girl and she killed him and stole his cash and car.

The next day when he was a no-show, Peter Coyote and the other guy had to find a new driver. They settled on that young, inexperienced guy. After they robbed the armored truck, the new get-away driver panicked, drove too fast, ended up killing that gangster's young daughter...which leads us to the rest of the film.

So if that guy wasn't murdered in the first scene, he would have been the get away driver instead, and the heist would have gone off without a hitch. But he was shot and killed, so they had to settle for the other guy, who in turn killed the gangster's daughter and ex-wife by crashing into them.
