I think the novel is great as well, despite the general consensus that it's one of Vonnegut's worst.

Hmm, I had never heard that this is thought of as one of Vonnegut's worst. I'd say it's my favorite along with Cat's Cradle and God Bless You, Dr. Kevorkian. I would have to say Slaughterhouse 5 is his worst.

Oddly enough Vonnegut in a chapter of Palm Sunday when he grades his own novels gives Slapstick a D. Also, he gave Palm Sunday a C

Read it anyway - an author's judgment of his work is always warped by his expectations and the 'weight' of his other output. As a novel to be read on its own terms by someone whose desires & self-regard aren't bound to it, it's fantastic.

i agree that cats cradle, dr. kevorkein, and slapstick are the best, but how could you call slaughterhouse five the worst? it's different, but, i wouldn't say worst.

reply

It's just my personal preference. I read it after having read many other Vonnegut books, and I did not think Slaughterhouse Five lived up to the hype. Not that it wasn't a good book; it certainly is. I just perfer many other Vonnegut books.

It is a good book, but his weakest one.

"i simultaneously puked and diarrheaed when i read the part about baby geniuses "

But.. that's what the book is about..

reply

not really. He and his sister are child geniuses and what not and he talks about his closeness to his sister, but it's about how they were smarter when they were together and this old man narrorating about his sister and thier life. It was written shortly after Vonnegut's sister's death (it says in the 20 page prolouge)

Bitch, that's a mistake (unforgivable)
