I think this movie is much more dark and unpleasant than the average '80s slasher. One of the best of that subgenre.

yes you're getting into it. getting into one of the reasons why this is better than most slasher films. this film has such a great level of integrity to it. when i first watched it i was 25 years old and the most seasoned horror movie watcher that can ever be and i thought it was going to be special and disturbing because i always used to see it in the horror section of my local mom and pop movie video rental store in my town when i was like 10 years old.

this film's video box(VHS tape) really captured my imagination with what it has on it's cover. it has a santa outfit's arm with an axe in the person's hand, sticking out of a chimney with snow around it. i mean, this is the best movie video box cover of all time. the reason why is it's so imagination enacting. it makes you think of so many ideas and possibilities for this film. your imagination goes wild thinking of a killer santa going down the chimney and killing so many people.

this is one of the darkest, one of the most unforgiving to the viewer, one of the most unflinching portrayals of a pure evil slasher film villain, and one of the most brutal and cold feeling slasher films that has ever been made. it's quality in every department is above most of the best slasher films.

SPOILERS IN HERE

it's tone is pure black. it's not like a friday the 13th film where there is light hearted characters and funny moments, where the atmosphere is funny and campy. this is a highly effective, sobering, and harrowing film. this is a psychological slasher film where it takes about an hour before we get to the killings which is really original in a slasher movie, both it being psychological and it taking about an hour before the killings begin. so they really get you disturbed by the dark and serious parts showing Billy being traumatized by watching his parents get killed by a man in a santa outfit.(which is one of the most disturbing scenes in movie history, shown unflinchingly this violent act in the harshest way possible so you totally get how much this disturbs Billy)

then they show Billy being further disturbed by an evil mother superior. so unlike the dime a dozen and most really slasher movies that have ever been made this one gets into the psychological effects which made Billy crazy which is so original and is really effective to the viewer, it's believable and impactful. so then the killings begin and my gosh the killings by Billy in this film are the most brutal, realistic, and heart wrenching, and disturbing killings that have ever been in a slasher film.
and they are all done so cold heartedly, so unfeelingly, and so callouslessly.

they do such a great job with the creative kills, the makeup effects, the eerie and creepy Christmas music, the great acting especially by Robert Brian Wilson(no beach boy here, lol) the funny and lovable characters, the intimidating and scary and disturbing villain, and with the tone, atmosphere, and feelings in every scene which makes you feel such dread and hopelessness. this is a cold, dark film and it's merciless in it's execution.

oh(getting back to the movie video box cover)it helped making it seem disturbing and powerful by it's warning statement of for mature audiences only. what's amazing is even as

the most seasoned horror movie watcher that i was 15 years ago, having watched everything you can think of and even going in to this film expecting it to be extremely disturbing and scary and hard to watch(from the movie video box cover i remembered as a child and held in my hand right before watching this film for the first time), i still was so shocked, disturbed, devastated, scared, and completely blown away by the powerful experience of watching this film for the first time.

i was begging this film to end about 3/4 of the way into it because my heart was so wrenched and i was so emotionally affected and disturbed. i think it was the realistic and cold ways they showed the violence everytime Billy killed someone that really disturbed me and that he was dressed in a santa outfit and the serious tone of the film and the serious way he acted, and the disturbing ways he said things around when he killed people and the things he said while around killing people.

ok, so when i watched it with a friend of mine he actually thought it was funny and i was like what? i was really disturbed when i watched it for the first time. is it a funny slasher film or is it just kind of funny? was my friend just not getting into it?

this is a travesty. movie chat.org better fix this problem. this is the ultimate slasher film. it's so disturbing, scary, and affecting, and eternally lasting as a classic slasher film. i see it as just as good as any slasher film and just as good as the best friday the 13th film, FT13th the final chapter.

10/10 it's a perfect slasher film which is quite powerful even after watching it a few times. imdb is retarded.

reply

probably should be around 6.5/10

reply

Definitely. It should be at least a 7 or higher, I rated it an 8/10.

reply

Agree. It's a good slasher flick that actually has some pretty disturbing moments that stick with you.

reply

5.9 is too low.. I’d give it a solid 6.8… it is uneven in spots but still a good slasher
