DVD versions of 'The Shooting Party'

Does anyone have any experience with the two versions currently offered by Amazon? Based on the comments, some people are happy with the BBC Warner version, and others are not (perhaps they refer to an early non-remastered version). There is also a version from Telavista. Obviously the widescreen version would be preferable, but not if it is a bad transfer. One comment refers to a 'Jef' version, which was described as poor. I hope this isn't the Telavista version.

I am going through the same decision.

Someone commented on this elsewhere on this board.

The BBC version is fine but not as memorable as the colors in the original. I do recommend it though because of all the wonderful extra features.

I bought a used dvd version on ebay. It describes itself as "stunning new digital restoration" and is just fine when I play it on a Mac computer and wearing headphones. The "Jef" reference I did not immediately understand, but on closer examination, it may refer to Copyright Geoff Reeve Films Ltd. It is all part of the same package. Go for it!

The version I have is the BBC version. Of all versions I've seen it is the most satisfactory.

Ps: the soundtrack is simply extraordinary

The version available through Netflix is horrific. Just pallid grey-green with light pink flesh tones. I was watching on a new TV but the overall picture quality is worse and more limited than my old CRT could produce. Occasionally white clothing glowed, apparently pushing the dynamic range beyond what could be handled by the wretched 1980s PC with 4 bit color they used for the transfer. It looks almost as if they passed it through VHS on the way to DVD.

Sound quality was a mess. James Mason spoke clearly, but the others mumbled.
