What was up with Bud Cort's hair?

His hairline changed. Earlier in the film he was seen to wear a wig and later on he went au natural showing less hair. Was this supposed to show him aging? Not sure what the time frame was while he was an adult - from medical school to starting his practice could not have been a whole lot of years???
