On DVD yet?

is this film ever going to bee on DVD uncut and subtitled.

reply

I can't wait for it to come out on DVD. Just watched it for the firste time ever on VHS, and I definitely want this movie in my DVD collection, ASAP!

reply

I also want Lensman subtitled on DVD, along with Macross Do You Remember Love, Golgo 13, and Light Years. Why they chose to put crap like Wizards on DVD first I'll never know.

Lensman came out during the anime explosion in North America (and subsequently the rest of the English speaking world like the UK, Australia, etc) during the late 80's-early 90's. Back then, we began to be flooded with a wave of good quality anime - all professionally dubbed/subtitled in English and all official releases (Lensman, Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Robot Carnival, Fist Of The North Star, Windaria AKA Once Upon A Time, Zillion, Project A-Ko, Venus Wars, Dominion: Tank Police, Appleseed, M.D. Geist, Macross II, Legend Of The Overfiend, Bubblegum Crisis, Gunbuster, Dangaio, etc.). Prior to that, during the Dark Ages of Anime, English speaking fans had to be content with the few anime shown on broadcast TV (which were almost always horribly butchered through heavy editing and rewrites) and bootleg anime from overseas (which were usually in Japanese only - which most of us cannot understand). Of course, now that anime wave has turned into a tsunami. A tremendous amount of English translated, unedited anime is now readily available for sale in DVD format at major stores or on-line as well as being shown on cable TV.

Unfortunately, when the English language anime explosion occured all those years ago, we were still using VHS format. As a result, I started accumulatng a huge collection of English language anime in VHS including Lensman. I have now for the most part, discarded the old VHS tapes in my collection, and replaced them with high quality DVDs (as financially painful as it was to do so). One of the animes that I am now awaitng to replace is of course, Lensman along with Robot Carnival. If they do release them eventually in DVD format, I hope they have the common sense of giving the DVDs the option of English dub or subtitle. I mean, isn't that one of the major benefits of DVD technology in the first place? The individual viewer should always have the choice of which option they prefer. The whole debate about "sub vs. dub" is a throwback to the early days of the English language anime explosion when everything was still in VHS format. It should no longer apply in this day and age. With DVD, you can sometimes get other language options in addition to English and Japanese such as French. I also hope when they release the films, they be in their original widescreen theatrical release format, and not fullscreen (again, a throwback to the old days of VHS).

Strength of mind, force of will...

reply

Can't speak for the others, but the Macross: Do You Remember Love has been in legal limbo for a good 15 years now, at least.

reply

Lensman was liscened by EE Smith's estate and it's certainly possible that after so many years they have all the rights. This wouldn't be a problem except that this film was thought to be so bad that there hasn't been any liscensing done since.

I have a good idea for a release: give it to Walt Disney Home Entertainment along with 7 other Streamline titles so that Disney can release an 8-Pack called "Streamline Special Editions".

I just watched this on youtube - amazing...

I would buy this on dvd in an *instant*!

With the Movie coming out within the next couple of years, I wouldn't be surprised if they release it, despite the fact that it's nothing like either the books or how the live action movie is gonna look, since it's being based on the books.

I seen this anime when I was about seventeen on a commercial TV station in Holland. It was a fantastic anime and I wanted it on VHS, but here in Holland it never came out. In Great Brittain It was out on VHS and it stated it was approx 120 min. Years went by it never came out on DVD for all I know, maybe only in Japan.I try to find it on the internet when it just begun to be permenent to stay in the the skool mediacenter.|See what it now is and will be. Moving ever faster, but that aside I only saw it was a Japan release not in rest of the world. Now it is 2013 and still isn't out anywhere

Should I sent a E-mail to that commercial TV station and write if they still have that title in there archive?

Wich studio the anime came from? Are there legal struggles about it?

reply

I checked Amazon and Ebay just a few days ago... it's still only on VHS. The only other option I see is to record from VHS to DVD.

reply

That right and it still is, but if you want to see it for free? You could watch it on YOUTUBE english dub picture not so great, but enjoyable if you want see Lensmen. I saw the movie a couple of weeks ago on my PS3 YOUTUBE channel for free

reply

I know, I found the Streamline version. But every time I find a film that I like on Youtube... the user either deletes it, or the user gets banned for using 3rd party software, or the company that owns the rights to the film will get Youtube to block it or take it down.

reply

That is completly right. Also I saw some episodes of ROBOTECH and I wanted the next one. It was there and than it was not.

reply

These days a lot people upload movies and TV episodes, if that user's videos and account gets banned, someone else has uploaded them. But then there are times when Youtube will be out in force and makes sure that everyone's video of that film or series is gone. There were at least 3 different users who uploaded the Unsolved Mysteries series... but now... only a few videos are still up.

February 2014 and no movie in sight...but that may be a blessing - John Carter - Warlord Of Mars got panned yet it was quite intelligent and certainly well made film ...yet it came across as a Star Wars copy despite the fact that the history is that Star Wars pludered from lots of sources including Warlord...the same fate would await Lensman..."oh its just Star Wars and Green Lantern cant they think of anything new..."

reply

still not out yet lol

i think i saw this on the sci fi ch in the uk years ago

is this the one were it has some excremental cgi scenes in it if i remeber rightly this turned out much better than when thay did that in golgo 13 lol

you will have to forgive the lack of full stops lack of proper spelling im dyslexic but not stupid

I think it's pretty clear this will never be on DVD or Blu-ray. It's likely caught up in legal red tape due to the Smith estate given that no DVD release has happened even in Japan.

There are fan restorations out there taken from old Japanese Laserdiscs. They've even started work on the TV series. That's probably all I should say.
