Is this movie available with english subtitles?

Hi,
I have a couple of american friends with kids between 3 and 7 years of age living here in Sweden, and they just GOT to see this masterpiece (both the kids and their parents, of course). Anyone know where to get this movie with english subtitles? There is an english release right?
Any details on this would be very appreciated.

And kudos to the one adding the "he is lacking me" quote to memorable quotes. :D

The English translation of RONIA, THE ROBBER'S DAUGHTER won the Mildred Batchelder prize for author Astrid Lindgren in 1984. The film version is the last project by the late Swedish director Tage Danielsson. Minnesota Film Arts screens the family-preferred version, in Swedish with English subtitles.

My daughter is named after this film.
How does one go about getting the film from Minnesota Film Arts?

Do you know if it's possible to find a copy of the English subtitled movie?

Here's the answer I got from Adam at Minnesota Film Arts organization today, after asking about the notorious movie:

"Marcus,

Unfortunately our 35mm print is a non-circulating print and we do not have a DVD or vhs of the film with subtitles.
You are amongst hundreds who have an interest in seeing this film. I think you’ll have to take the trip up to Mpls to view it. But I must warn you that about 1 minute of footage is missing from our print.

Best regards,
Adam"

reply

According to the MnFilmArts website, their print is the only English subtitled one in existence.

Hi Hoffe

You can goto this page http://www.subtitles-divx.net/ and search for Ronja and you goto either one of these:

http://www.subtitles-divx.net/222109/Ronja+Rovardotter.html
http://www.subtitles-divx.net/222108/Ronja+the+Robbers-daughter.html

click on the English Subtitle
type in the code you get to download the subtitle
unpack it
name the file exact the same name as your movie in the same folder if its a file
or if you have it on dvd you use a program that can load in subtitles like DVD Subber. That program is freeware from www.download.com
It's a good tool if the text isn't synchronized with the speak.

best wishes

Fantastic, thank you sir! I was just about to go buy the english version of the book and make that into subtitles myself.

I'm not sure about how to get the subtitles onto a DVD they can play in their DVD player, but I think google might be able to help me out there. Thanks again!

Thank you a million times!!

I've had this movie in swedish for a couple of years now,
and thanks to you I can finally watch it and share it with friends!

The german dubbed version is a very fond childhood memory of mine.

Oh my, I am so enraged by the DVD's made for movies by Astrid Lindgren's books (Ronja included). What the hell were they thinking putting just and only swedish subtitles in the DVDs when children all over Scandinavia have been enjoying these films for ages? The dubbed versions are patronising and dumb. I am Finnish and used to learn Swedish as a child just by watching these films. Not to mention the dubbing ALWAYS hurts the film and it's charm.

The DVD completely shuts this wonderful film from audiences who don't understand Swedish (or Norwegian or Finnish) and that I think is a very very big shame.

I think CVMC has it for rent. If you join you will be rewarded.

Sorry to disagree, but what you're saying about dubbed versions is not always true. The German dubbing is very well done. Great voices and acting, and if you're used to watching dubbed films you really can't complain about lack of charm.
Of course, if there's no real "dubbing industry" with real actors, the dubbing is going to be rubbish.

I love this film and watch it in German almost every year and just had to comment, sorry. ;-)

True, as i dont like dubbed films i have to say czech version of Ronja is very well made. Sure i watched it a lot as a kid so i know and remember all the voices and cant imagine them differently. But still the dubbing is excellent...
