When was it set?

I have just seen this enchanting film, and was totally captivated by the scenery, the song and dancing, the acting, and the costumes.

However, I have not read the book, and would like to know WHEN the story is supposed to be placed.

The costumes seem to give an indication of around the 11th or 12th century, but it could be as early as the 10th or as late as the 13th.

Either that, or it is not supposed to be set in ANY specific time frame, just as in some other fantasy films.....

Anyone have any ideas?

It is described as "early Middle Ages".

They have stone castles, monks and noble ladies with fancy hats.
So, at least some time after the Swedish viking age (800-1150) and probably before the black death (1350).
