6.1 IMDB rating?

I don't get it. I watched this movie tonight, and I found it to be a very well-made and nice film. And with four Oscar nominations! I really have to regard this movie as a quality film, and I really can't figure out why people here have given it a 6.1 star rating.

You shouldn't pay too much attention to ratings on this site. It's overrun by members of the ADD generation, that only vote highly for the hot new thing. That's why new movies have such ridiculous ratings. An older, well made movie like this is just too "slow" for many of the raters on this site.

Ya you said it.

Oh, well, it was average good movie. I liked the acting and the photography. Nothing more than it. I'd rate it 6.5, but I expected a bit more from The River...

You're right.
What you say makes sense.
the movie was an extremely well-made, well-acted film.
Top Gibson.

What is 'ADD' - is that attention deficit disorder or somink coz we don't really have that label in the UK yet - we only just got to grips with dyslexia for fekks sake .

I think the question has to be : who is more intelligent ? The older generations who used to fix their own cars , or , the new generation of instant gratification junkies who need to phone someone whenever there is a problem .........? We are doomed

There were stupid people last generation, and stupid people this generation. People on average always think they're smarter than people younger than them. The generation before the current one thinks they are smarter than the current one. But the one before that thought they were smarter than that one, and it keeps going on and on and on...etc. While yeah i'll agree on average the current generation seems less intelligent than the last one. But it doesn't mean everyone is that way.

I'm 17 part of the "current generation" and i can take a engine apart almost piece by piece and reassemble it where it works the same or better. I can also do this with the computer i'm typing on right now. I don't watch nor like hardly any of the popular movies and music. I'm more of a Braveheart, hard rock type guy instead of a reality show, pop person. I'm not even that smart of a person but you can't stereotype an entire generation over actions of pop culture. Stupid people are always louder than smart ones.

"Stupid people are always louder than smart ones. " . . . wise words indeed ! Are you sure you're only 17 !!!

What I meant was that ALL older generations seem to be more practicle than people nowadays - not just teenagers - and I am generalising of course .

When I drive around nowadays I am constantly amazed at people breaking down on motorways & not thinking to roll into the hard shoulder out of the way , or folks standing by a car with a flat tyre phoning up the emergency services ! It's becoming more & more common - people pulling out their mobile phones coz they don't know what to do . Maybe it's because when I grew up there were none - just a thought .

That i'll agree on. My dad showed me how to change a flat at 9. It's not hard, and it's a lot cheaper and quicker to do it themselves. Common sense isn't so common anymore, it's being replaced with ignorance and laziness.

I thought it was pretty good but something about The River kept it from being great. Thing is, I just can't put my finger on it, its probably the fact that Mel Gibson was in it. Why cast him in a film that takes place in the deep south? He is so far from playing this type. Sissy was great in the film though. My favorite scene was when the bull frees her from the tractor that was a great scene.

Either way, the best 'back woods hick' film is still Deliverance.

This movie is a solid 7, maybe 7.5. Not a great movie, but certainly well made and of some topical importance considering how much corporate farming accelerated around this time. I'm also surprised by the rating, but I seriously doubt that's due to the usual culprit ADD kiddies. I find it hard to believe, first of all, that they would bother watching this film, and second, if they did, that they'd bother rating it in significant enough numbers.
