Is this the right movie?

I remember watching a movie when I was a kid. The only thing I remember about it is a girl being chased, someone falling into a pit full of wooden spikes, and maybe that occuring in the mountains or on a big hill? And then I remember Brian Dennehy saying something to a girl like "Why don't you just stay in your backyard next time?" and she says, "The river is my backyard". That had to have been at least 15 years ago, so I can't tell if thats all the same movie or if I have somehow put two movies together.

Is this the right movie? Or have I gotten two movies mixed up?

It isn't Brian Dennehy that ask the question( he is in the movie though), but the girl's response is right, although she may have said the Mississippi River. I don't remember the pit of wooden spikes but there was a lot of chasing going on. (Actually Brian was doing most of the chasing.)

Maybe you're thinking of the patch of Poison Ivy instead of wooden stakes.

I think you have 2 movies mixed up. Most of what you described is from The River Rat. The part about the girl being chased and someone falling into the pit of wooden spikes may be from another movie I know of. The movie is called Fortress and it was released in 1986, 2 years after River Rat. It was set in Australia was about a school teacher and her students that were taken hostage and put in a cave and they escape. Not sure if it is the one your thinking of, but might be.

Unless you're thinking of "The Goonies", which Martha Plimpton is also in. Data, played by Ke Huy Quan, is the one who falls in but stops just short of the spikes thanks to one of his inventions.
