Today yes, in 1984 probably not. Keep in mind there was no public internet then, they watched it in real time, not recording it for sharing ( although I could see Booger doing this).
They would most likely be expelled, but nobody who watched the movie at the time thought they would face jail time.
Like the Betty trick sex scene, in 1984 naughty behavior yes, criminal no.

I always assumed they did record some of it based on the picture of Betty they used in the pies they were selling later in the movie. The more I think about it, the more I realize how little of this movie would fly today lol

This post is downright depressing to read, but having just watched the movie recently I will make one contribution. The Alpha Betas trashing the Tri-Lambs house. That wasn't a prank its vandalism and they deserved to be in jail.
