The Roosevelt statue

It had never dawned on me before (no pun intended) that the Theodore Roosevelt statue that's shown at the beginning is rather careworn and covered with bird crap (this was also the first time I watched it on BluRay, so perhaps it just wasn't as noticeable before). Before I'd always just taken showing the statue as part of the Americana Milius was trying to show--the kids going to school, the paperboy on his bike--before the bullets started flying, but I think there's a subtle message there about complacency and not honoring the past. People had become too comfortable and not as vigilant.

Anyway, not exactly a profound discovery, but it's always nice when you can re-watch a 30 year old film that you've seen a dozen times and still find new things.
