The Release Date is Wrong!
I remember seeing this movie back in late 1982!
Not 84 as IMDB says.
Does anyone else remember that?

First off, I use to work for Wherehouse records in late 1983 and I remember renting this movie out to customers.
Second, all the music in the movie came out in 1982, "Kids in America" "Never Say Never"
And I know Daryl Hannah didn't play a high school student 2 years after "Summer Lovers"
This movie came out somewhere between late 82 and early 83

It definately came out in 1984. I saw it in the theater in the winter of 1984.

Additionally, the MGM/UA videocassette box lists the release date as 1984.
Regarding the song use in the film as songs from 1982/83, most films are shot anywhere from a year (or more) to six months before theatrical release. Most likely the film was shot in 1983, when all of those pop songs were in heavy rotation.
I don't know what else to tell the OP. Perhaps they saw it at a pre-release test screening?

shareI'd be willing to bet it was shot in 1982 but wasn't released theatrically until 1984...just look at Billy Jacoby(the kid who played Tracy's brother David) in this movie and then look at him in "Just One of the Guys" which came out in 1985. He looks at least 3-4 years younger in Reckless.
