A sweet gem of a movie

This is a great love story, a great period piece, and a wonderful movie. Even tho Elizabeth McGovern, Nicolas Cage, and Sean Penn were already "stars", they were simply outstanding here. Some of the love scenes were so touching and painful, it almost hurt to watch. There were plenty of laughs and smiles, as well. One of my all time favorites!

Sorry, but it is touching and sweet - not all things that are ugly, are ugly to the core, sometimes the ugly is juxtaposed against other things that are rich with beauty - here I think it was friendship and sharing and enlightenment. The abortion brought a beauty in Penn's character standing up to Nicky's behavior and in McGovern's (who wasn't even friends with Sally at the time of the abortion) with Penn defending her and recognizing the blithe attitude that Nicky had with everything including Sally's feelings. McGovern reached out to be with someone she didn't even know - went in with Sally during the abortion and held her afterward. It really clarified the difference between the two boys and left us with a question of how did two so unlikely characters become friends? It helped paint how painful that era was - not just for soldiers but families on the home front - and what they would give (even virginity) to boys leaving for war - and btw things don't really change that much war to war - I lost mine to a Marine heading for Vietnam.

You put it beautifully. The acting was absolutely superb and the movie - the screenplay perfection. Leaves me wondering what the Academy considers great acting. Admittedly 1984 was the year of The Killing Fields and Places in the Heart but not even NOMINATING this for any award at all? Unconscionable.
