Just saw Purple Rain for the first time in 25 years

I was 4 when I first saw it on a copied VHS tape.

Man Morris made me laugh with the dumpster scene, the password and when he got pushed back onto the boxes

Prince was well horny with Apolloion, I dont remember that stuff but then again I only remember the music

reply

Just to ask how old are you? I'm 27 years old and was born in 1982.

I first saw this movie as a kid in the 80's as well I think I was about 5, I remember certain parts in the movie. I just brought this movie the weekend at FYE music and watching it now. I know the dumpster scene you talking about I laughed at that part. I'm like you I just remembered the movie for its music and Prince with his sexy ass.

reply

I was born in 1980, as a boy I wanted to be like Prince after this movie, his smile and dance moves

My dad when he watched the film with me would fast forward throught the more adult scenes and tried to play it off, lol

reply

lol...I'm not sure how I saw the movie myself I think I saw it on TV. Like I said I was about 4 or 5 myself in 1986, 87 when I first saw this movie. I'm sure my parents had me cover my eyes during the sex scenes.

reply

I first saw this movie in my 30s. "baby boomer"

I loved how Morris had all this chemistry to play off comedy so well. I was glad to see him take on more roles after that (i.e. 227). But looking back wish he would have done more acting than singing because he was good at it.

Poop in his hand ... Poop in his hand

Morris had a tiny role in Ford Fairlane, and of course played himself in Jay and Silent Bob strike back. He steals almost every scene he's in.

I saw Morris Day and the Time in 2008, and my expectations were low based on his age and how time had passed...but let me tell you, he and Jerome and the boys tore it up.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

I distinctly remember seeing TV advertisements for Purple Rain in the summer of 1984. Specifically, the scene at Lake Minnetonka with Prince and his motorcycle and a sexy-looking Apollonia Kotero. At the time (I was 7) I thought the movie was about sex... specifically because of that scene. As a result, I always had that perception of this film (even though I'd never seen it) until I was much older and viewed it for the first time and found out it was all about music. Ha ha!

this first came out on cable in 85 when i was 9 or 10 and i watched it probably 50 times. That and Breakin 2 were may favorite movies around that age. I've seen both recently and they are both horrible, I still enjoy the album "purple rain" but maybe they should've gotten more than 2 professional actors. And I don't think it is just the acting since the acting is pretty bad in "Clerks" but that is still an enjoyable movie to watch. PR is just seems to fail all around

reply

I admit the acting, script, and storyline were terrible (but god is Morris Day funny), HOWEVER, you cannot say that PR just seems to fail all around. What about the music and its performance? My god, those scenes yank me out of how silly the movie can be and I realize I am watching a genius at work. The music is astounding.

reply

Oh, yeah the music is great and it seems to center on that. It seems to be a 90 minute commercial for the album. Let me restate what i meant, everything seem to fail except the musical scenes.

^ What coolblue said.

reply

Then again I only remember the music

And that's pretty much what everybody else remembers about this movie: The music, which is great for the most part. The story is completely forgettable.

"Purple Rain" has aged like a fine wine. I am joking, of course. But the music was and still is terrific. Almost everyone in the movie was playing themselves. Sometimes typecasting is a director's best friend. Prince was basically playing himself but was called "The Kid". His acting received poor reviews. How can someone do a lousy job of playing himself in a movie?

reply

By all accounts that WAS Prince....introverted and NO actor. This was something he wanted to do. I doubt he thought he was going to win an academy award. But he DID win a Grammy award so not too shabby at all! I don't think the younger people on these boards get it at all. In no way did he do PR because he thought he was Pacino! Geez, people. This is not a movie to sit and critique as if it is Citizen Kane or Gone With the Wind!

Prince was an indisputable musical genius. This movie was a fun little romp that depicts the 80's well. I was 14 when it came out and just starting to have a first romance, just started high school, etc.... Anyone younger was not really capable (IMO) of really understanding the infectious intensity of Prince. His larger than life presence would just be lost on children.

Same here.

In honor of his passing, I decided to watch the Blu-ray version of this movie. I haven't seen it since the 1990s and it was on VHS at the time. Of course, my parents didn't know about the Lake Minnetonka scene, LOL!

Wow, this movie reeks of the 1980s. If it weren't for the phenomenal music, I would have forgotten about it a long time ago. Everything about it, the crappy acting, the ridiculous dumpster scene, the musical score in the background, the style, all seems very campy.

I'll probably never bother watching Graffiti Bridge (1990) since I've heard that it's a thousand times worse than this film. At least I can listen to Prince's music whenever I want to.

"Wow, this movie reeks of the 1980s"

that's why it was awesome!
