What was the significance of the pocket full of rye?

Where did Mr. Fortescue get the rye? I didn't think that this was properly explained. A friend and I both watched it and, at the end, neither of us could explain about the rye. Any thoughts, or should I just read the book?

We were told towards the end of the film that Gladys had dropped the rye into Mr. Fortescue's pocket, along with having doctored the marmarlade under the instructions of Lance.

It is to fit in with the nursery rhyme.
"Sing a song of sixpence, A pocket full of rye".
