Yes. Malkovich was simply great in this. As excellent an actor that he is, I think he was never better. Because he is so intense both in looks and in personality, he rarely gets the kind of very subtle and multifaceted role he had in Places in the Heart.

I agree with most of your list and would add these names to it:
1) Kirk Douglas who was only nominated 3 times! And he should have definitely won for "Lust for Life".
2) Edward G. Robinson who was one of the best film actors of his time and was never even nominated.
3) Montgomery Clift nominated 4 times and never won. He came to film shortly before Brando and helped revolutionize film acting.
4) Barbara Stanwyck. For all of her great performances, only nominated 4 times and never won.
5) Jean Arthur. An excellent film actress, wildly popular in her time who could perform in any film genre only nominated once and never won.
6)Paul Fix one of the great character actors in film. Never nominated.
7) Brock Peters. He was one of the greatest actors in film history who never gave a bad performance. The greatest oversight of his career was that he was not only never nominated for any of his roles, but in particular his not even being acknowledged for his amazing role as "Tom Robinson" in "To Kill a Mockingbird". That performance was one of the great performances in film history.

Completely agree with the OP. Malkovich made a great performance in this movie!

You can add John Barrymore, Eli Wallach, Richard Conte, Ralph Richardson, Ida Lupino, and Roy Scheider.

I have to respectfully disagree with the original poster. Malkovich was fine in this film. I have never actually seen him deliver a bad performance before, but in no way shape or form was he better than Haing S. Ngor in The Killing Fields, who delivered the most heartrending performance I've ever seen. I'm sure Mr. Ngor's Oscar victory was an easy landslide. I'll go so far as to say that Malkovich himself was better as Al Rockoff in The Killing Fields and that Danny Glover's passionate performance was superior to him in Places in the Heart.
