list of inventions that would be new to David and Jim

I think I caught some good ones, can anyone else help make a list of inventions, or engineering developments, encountered in the movie, which would have seemed new to the two sailor guys?

helicopters... television existed in the early 40's, but it wasn't widespread until about 1948... cars with automatic transmission... aluminum beer cans... superhighways... video games...

It seemed odd to me that David didn't encounter any touch-tone phones. Those phones had been around for a couple of decades and had been quite common since the seventies. The automatic transmission had been around since the twenties so I'm not sure about that one. What about audio cassettes, ballpoint pens and microwave ovens?
