An Alleged True Story, But Could It Actually Be Possible?

I was always intrigued about that possibility after hearing about this top secret true story from World War II. Entertaining stuff, but sounds a bit too far fetched.

A lot of the stuff presented in the legend come from a single document. I don't remember all of the details of it, but it took on a life of its own. What is particularly interesting, though, is that the book of the same name by Charles Berlitz plagiarizes a work of fiction.

This is a legend that sounds nice, and it wouldn't surprise me if the United States Government worked on a way to make a ship physically invisible by bending light. It falls apart, however, when you get into the nitty-gritty. The final scenes show people melted into the ship, a key part of the legend. If the USS Eldridge had not been in service after October 1943, it would, perhaps, lend some credence. Unfortunately, it was not decommissioned until 1992 so...

According to science, Light waves can bend, if affected by a strong gravitational force, like a star. (I am not sure a navy ship could generate the necessary field to do this).

The theory is, if you can bend light around an object, it would render it... or make it look as if it... were invisible.

Many call a technological device that would be used to achieve this, a cloaking device.

Technically, it is supposed to be possible. But achieving it, isn't so easy.

Then you have potential side effects. What happens if you do manage to create a strong magnetic field to achieve this? Will it just affect the ship? Probably not. Other things would be affected too.

We also don't know if it could create a black hole, or even a wormhole... like what was seen in the movie.

(According to the urban legend, the ship was transported to another place on the planet, and then came back. Perhaps a wormhole was created them too...)

I am not sure if it should ever be tried... or if the event really happened, again...
