What was John Carpenter's involvement ?!

I have now read several times that John Carpenter is listed as Executive Producer of the film .... I have also heard that he did not appear on the set or met the director --has anyone ever read or seen any interviews on any more details with Carpenter's involvement with the film ?! ... it is a curiosity, especially IF he was never on the set .....
