Why does Jennifer Connelly doesn't like PHENOMENA?

I remember that a few years ago, maybe 2006,Jennifer Connelly appeared on the Conanb O'Brian talk show to promote a new movie she was appearing in and when Conan told Ms. Connelly that he enjoyed PHENOMENA under it's US title but then she started dissing the movie by mentioning the incident she had with the chimp that almost cost her a finger. But in the PHENOMENA DVD extras on the Anchor Bay DVD both Dario Argento and Daria Nicolodi spoke very highly of Jennifer Connelly's performance in the film and Ms.Connelly refuses to talk about the movie up to the point of not being interviewed for both the British and US DVD releases of the film.

She's probably stuck up and embarrassed by the film. Though a has been, she is an Oscar winner, and how many of them do you see bringing up horror films they've appeared in long ago? Tom Hanks never mentions HE KNOWS YOU'RE ALONE, George Clooney has never discussed RETURN TO HORROR HIGH or the unfinished GRIZZLY 2 though I think he did compare BATMAN AND ROBIN to RETURN OF THE KILLER TOMATOES (which was trying to be a stupid film), and Renee Zellweger I think has been asked about TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE NEXT GENERATION but I'm not sure if she's serious or joking or just talking about the film experience and not the actual film.

If the great, classical actor Richard Johnson is willing to talk about his experiences while filming Lucio Fulci's Zombie Flesh Eaters, I can't understand why Ms.Connelly is embarrassed about appearing in Dario Argento's Phenomena. It's my fave Argento flick, along with Tenebrae and Deep Red.Sure, it's pretty wild and over-the-top, but Italian horror films of the 1980s generally were.

I remember when she promoted "Beautiful Mind" on Conan O'Brien in 2002 or so, and she talked about this film. She never said "like" or "hate" about it, although her attitude suggested she felt it was very bizarre. Sometimes actors and actresses are embarrassed, but that doesn't make them stuck up. Other times it is the publicists and agents who feel talking lightly and amicably about such films will do damage to one's image or career. I do feel, in the case of Ms. Connelly, that it's not the agents talking. This film is no award winner, that's for sure.

reply

Conan brought up the film without provocation? That is interesting. Was he bringing it up to make fun of it, or did it seem like he was actually a fan?

Exactly how many "has beens" get to star in a 150 million blockbuster like Noah?

reply

Charlotte_Kaye Who cares? Noah sucked, it bombed big time in the US and under performed internationally. The film cost 125,000,000 not 150.

reply

Maybe she´s got good taste? But, of course, that cannot be because she appeared in both Requiem For A Dream and A Beautiful Mind as an adult. Presumably after reading the script first.

I haven't seen the Conan O'Brien interview, but if it's true that she bad-mouthed Phenomena then it completely contradicts her opinion of it when she appeared on the David Letterman Show (I think that was sometime in the early 90s). On Letterman she praised Phenomena and even called it "beautiful".

In this 2010 german interview with the 'Süddeutsche Zeitung' she doesn't really badmouth the movie... but only a small part is about 'Phenomena' - I tried to translate.

http://www.sueddeutsche.de/kultur/interview-ich-glaube-an-geister-1.424100

It translates like that:

Süddeutsche Zeitung: You seem to have been quite couragous even as a child-actor. How else could you have worked on the horror-shocker 'Phenomena' with crazy Dario Argento at age 14?

Jennifer Connelly: Believe it or not, but that movie was an exception - I was into that project with all my heart and soul. My parents wanted to turn down the role but I was deadly wounded and so I made troubles until they agreed to me participating in it. I met Dario Argento and liked him instantly. And I wanted to go to Italy. The film was made there.

SZ: But you must have recognized that this guy is somewhat bizarre, didn't you?

Connelly: Well, he looks a bit like a skeleton and wears this haircut for monks that strangely went wrong. Back then I thought it being a bit strange that his own daughter played the first victim brutally killed. Her head got chopped off. But believe me, that guy is strangely amiable as well and when you're on the set you can see quite clearly that the head is made of rubber. It didn't bother me at all back then.

SZ: What about the scene with you falling into a dump full of decaying corpses?

Connelly: The special-effects-guy told me with pride that all that's in that dump is edible. He cooked tons of pasta and told me exactly what ingredients he used. So basically I jumped into a dump of food, which was maybe a little disgusting but for a teenager it was great fun. Today I'm personally not that interested in this kind of horror anymore - today I prefer it a bit more subtle, a bit more on the psychological side and a bit more believable. Maybe a bit more in the direction of 'Dark Water'.

That all interesting about that German inter4view with Jennifer Connelly about PHENOMENA but does that interview also cover the incident of Jennifer's finger almost get bitten off by the chimp when Argento filmed that final scene in PHENOMENA?

reply

No sorry - nothing about that incident.

reply

Thank you for the translation. I've long been curious about how she felt in regards to this film.

reply

Wtf Dark water was a terrible film. Subtle or just *beep*

reply

It's a terrible film and it almost lost her a finger; I think it's pretty fair enough if she doesn't remember it fondly.

"It's a terrible film" - says YOU. I happen to think it is a brilliant and beautiful movie.

Seriously? Brilliant? Or entertaining in a similar way that watching people fail at the cinnamon challenge is entertaining?

reply

solmaquina What's "terrible" about it? It sure beats the shitty horror films that come out today.

Jennifer Connelly seems like a piece of work in general. Like, she's always sorta badmouthing Labyrinth, and Phenomena, and that movie she made where she was the hot chick who gets locked in a Target with the nerdy guy... The thing that sucks is, I totally get if she wants to put distance between herself and her earlier projects or whatever, but when the directors and other actors from these films get interviewed, they always say she's great. And then she goes on to act like working with them was a chore she's still conflicted about. I'd hate to direct her in something. I'd be too afraid she'd go on record five years later to say she thinks the project is stupid.

reply

I've never heard her badmouth Labyrinth or Phenomena, though the latter film would really deserve it as it's an immature and poor movie. In the 2010 interview linked earlier, she remembers it affectionately.

YOU'RE an immature and poor movie.

LOL, and you're a mature and great movie, and so is your taste in films. :D

I've seen her praise both Labyrinth and Phenomena numerous times in interviews.

Compared to a lot of odd plotted 80's movies this one is great, she should be happy that she was in one of the better ones, when way more famous actors were in really really awful cheesy horror movies! Atleast this one is pretty good. I liked it, it was much better than I thought it'd be, I thought it was gonna be Lke a serious dr. Doo little type thing, but she just relates to the insects not actually has conversions with them so made it a lot better, more believable if still out there, but conversations would've been over the top so glad they didn't go there. Anyway I agree with the awful horror flicks George clooney starred in but the Rene zellweger Texas chainsaw is my fave one! That's the best outta all of em so not sure why she would be embarrassed either! That's saying a lot bc I usually think the slasher type horror flicks are stupid, prefer the psychological ones like carnival of souls etc....

reply

its quite simple - she doesnt want to be associated with this pile of sh!t

the fanboys can get upset - its a bad film get over it

reply

She's been associated with quite a few piles of sh!t, so why single out this movie? She got a lead role as inexperienced teen actress and didn't even have to show her tits like she's done more than once in supporting roles in pretty bad movies.

If everybody that likes this (or kinda likes it) is a "fanboy", then maybe everyone who doesn't like it is simply too stupid to understand it. Aren't gross over-generalizations fun?

reply

yeah but you are deluded if you think Phenomena is anything more than a mess

reply

its a dreadful flick

reply

It's a terrific movie but it's beyond some people's grasp.

I think she should be proud of appearing in one of Dario Argento's best movies.

Glad this thread exists! Also glad to find out while she may not love the movie, she has indeed said some nice things about it.
